Several moves taken by Egypt recently showed focus on reinforcing economic ties with its African counterparts. First, in March 2018, Egypt signed an agreement to launch the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) in July 2019. Also in July, the Egyptian Minister of Public Enterprise Hisham Tawfik announced that his ministry intends to provide sea shipping from Ain Sokhna to East Africa at prices 20% cheaper than the market. The ministry aims at establishing logistic centers in Uganda and Djibouti (East Africa) before expanding into West Africa. Within days, the Egyptian government should also announce a new export rebate program and is currently settling outstanding rebates due in an attempt to encourage exporters in different sectors.
